Thankful Things

A few weeks ago we took a trip back to Chattanooga to catch up with friends and check to see if our house is still standing. It was one of those whirlwind trips we're so good at taking. It was the kind where we probably spend more time in the car than at our destination. But every mile of highway we covered was worth it to spend time with the people we love.

Who would have ever imagined I could say, "Some of my best friends are Southerners?"

one fell swoop

Because our time was so limited we decided to organize a few group activities in the hope of seeing as many people as we could. The plan worked nicely, though I'll admit it turned out to be one of those trips where you're so busy enjoying the company you forget to take pictures.

sweet babies

When it was all over and we were driving home exhausted but content I found myself in awe. I wasn't  in awe of how wonderful my friends are. I mean, they are. (even the ones that I didn't get any pictures of...) I was in awe of how much has changed. I'm in awe of the prayers that have been answered in the short time that I've been away.

Sweet moment Sweet girl

There are new homes, jobs, babies, and plans. Things and people that I distinctly remember praying for are now here.

sweet baby

Sure all the answers didn't come in the timing we demanded them. And the answers don't look exactly as we might have imagined. But there are countless answers. And many of those answers are even more perfect than we might have dreamed.

squishy baby

I've found myself clinging to that thought this week. As we wrestle with news of a family member in a wicked health battle, I'm clinging to the comfort of prayer.

I'm not about to claim to be an expert on prayer. Believe me, I've got lots of questions about how it all works. But there is one thing I've come to understand. Whether we get the answer we want or we don't, we get an answer. Whether we get the answer in our timing or not, we get an answer. And the answers, though sometimes difficult to swallow, will grow us, will change us, and will draw us closer to our heavenly father if we allow them to.

Sweet boy sweet friends

So today I'm thankful...not just for the trip to Chattanooga and the time with friends. And I'm not just thankful for the lessons that crazy town continues to teach me even after we've left. I'm thankful for the comfort of prayer and the privilege to see it shape my life and the lives of those around me.

What are you thankful for this week?

5 Reasons to Love Milwaukee

I'm developing a mad crush on Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Milwaukee's Beautiful Veterans' Park

This weekend, we took a quick trip up to Brew City for the Milwaukee Kite Festival. And on the way home I started counting the reasons why I think that town is simply grand.

Milwaukee Kite Festival

1. There is the obvious reason that is illustrated in the photos above. It's full of pretty. Pretty lake front, pretty views... the place is just plain pretty.

2. The city and its people seem mildly obsessed with cheese. If you ask me, there is nothing wrong with that. Cheese curds? Yes, please.

3. Milwaukee, like so many cities in the Midwest is chock full of big beautiful Catholic churches. And let's face it, hardly anyone does big beautiful churches like those crazy Catholics.

4. People are really nice there. And it isn't that "Bless your heart" kind of nice I had a healthy dose of down South. It's Wisconsin nice. There is a special kind of seemingly authentic, refreshingly genuine nice that I've encountered there. Maybe it's all the cheese?

5. Milwaukee is home to some pretty fantastic people.*

Gangsta Baby 2

Gangsta Baby
Remember Anna? Well, she's all grown up and totally gangsta.

Do you think there might be a correlation between the amount of cheese a person eats and how nice they are?

*Once again, Charlotte, we didn't get a picture taken together. THIS MUST STOP HAPPENING. Because you are definitely part of what makes Milwaukee pretty fantastic!
Thanks for sharing your Sunday with us.

Mmm Mmm Monday: Dinger Dogs

We also got a chance to catch a Twins game while we were on our road trip to Minneapolis.

Target Field

I bet you couldn't guess that an important part of our ball park experience is dinner.

dingerdog & fries

At Target Field we got Dinger Dogs. Dinger Dogs aren't your average hot dogs. They're foot long hot dogs!

helmet full of nachos

We also stuffed ourselves with Nachos.  In case it's tough to see (disposable camera problems) that is an adult sized batting helmut filled with ooey, gooey Nachos.

Indulgent or what?

banner of shame

In 1987, the Minnesota Twins beat the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series. Therefore, I hereby dub that banner the banner of shame.

Check - Target Field

How Target Field Measures Up
Hot Dog: The Dinger Dog was definitely filling. I'm not going to say it was the tastiest dog I've ever tried, but it definitely gets points for being nearly two dogs in one!

Nachos: Again, here, they get high points for quantity. Yellow corn chips, nacho cheese, ground beef and jalapeƱos...and lots of it. And plenty of novelty points for being served in a batting helmet.

Most Obvious Sponsor Presence: The Twins play in Target Field... but Budweiser, US Bank and Best Buy had a very visible presence also.

Unique to Target Field: During one of the innings they had a little boy helping with announcer duties.  He called out each player before their at bat started. It was pretty stinking cute.

Our trip to Target Field means another stadium crossed off the list and another major league culinary experience. What the sports fans in the twin cities might be missing in flavor they certainly make up for in portion size. Perhaps they're packing in the calories for the cold weather on the horizon.

Are you totally grossed out that we ingested that much junk food during 9 innings?

Road Trip Recap

Last weekend, the handsome hubby and I set off on a road trip. I bet you've been sitting on the edge of your seat wondering where we were headed, haven't you?

Well, your wait is over. I'm here with all the dirt.

Road Trip Pit Stop

We drove North through Wisconsin (which was surprisingly picturesque) and ended up in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Unfortunately, about two hours into the drive I reached for my camera only to discover I'd left it back in Chicago. But we didn't let that stop us from documenting the trip. We stopped and bought a few disposable cameras and continued on our merry way.

Coldplay
confetti | lasers | light up bracelets
fantastic effects almost as great as the band

Friday night we saw Coldplay in concert!

Yes, we drove to Minneapolis to see them even though
they'd been in Chicago earlier that week.

Twin Cities Rail

We spent Saturday afternoon at the Mall of America. No sales tax on clothing or shoes, a selection of roller coasters and I mean, come on, it's the MALL OF AMERICA enticed us to spend a few hours exploring it.

Mall of America

Lego Sculptures in Mall of America

Enormous Lego sculptures were an unanticipated bonus.

Minnesota
holy puffy-faced, early morning, pre-coffee face!!
This is clearly an instance where being able to see the picture immediately would have come in handy.

This trip meant that I'm one step closer to visiting all 50 states! Yay for progress on my Ultimate To DO list.

Any adventures in Minneapolis you can share?

Campy Nostalgia: A Visit to Southfork

For years during my childhood, Friday night meant two things in my house, Imo's pizza and Dallas on television. The Ewings and the Barnes and their family feud was how my parents and I would kick off the weekend. It was a big haired, shoulder padded, cowboy hat wearing weekly tradition.

So imagine my excitement when I had the chance to visit SOUTHFORK ranch earlier this year. The hubby was in training, and I got to join him in Dallas for a few days. While he was in class I snuck out and headed to Parker, TX. I spent the afternoon touring an iconic television homestead. It. Was. Epic.

Southfork - Dallas, TX

It was on that tour, that I realized that soon, very soon, TNT would be airing an all new Dallas! This time around, John Ross and Christopher (J.R. and Bobby's sons) will be the one battling it out. It's a whole new generation of campy, oil soaked, television drama.

And it all starts tonight!

The Southfork Driveway - Dallas, TX

Unfortunately, they weren't filming at Southfork the day that I was there. But, the house was used for location shoots for the new series.  The whole tour staff was happy to share stories of how wonderfully sweet and friendly Patrick Duffy, Linda Gray and Larry Hagman all are. I slurped up every bit of name dropping goodness like any life long Dallas fan certainly would. I was in geeky, fanatic heaven.

Dallas

My trip to Southfork definitely made my first trip the Longhorn state totally memorable. Not only could I check another state off the Ultimate To DO list, I got to take a step back in time. As bizarre as it is, Southfork is a cherished piece of my childhood. Here's hoping the new series is an equally guilty pleasure.

Is there a television location from your childhood that you'd love to visit?

Paducah or Bust

This weekend, I took what was possibly the most beautiful drive of my life, to Paducah. The colors of the leaves along the highway were absolutely, positively breathtaking. Breath. Taking. Anyway, I fear there is a good chance you might have never heard of Paducah. There are two reasons for my fear. First, several of the people to whom I mentioned my trip looked at me with a quizzical look on their face and said, "What is Paducah?" (not "where" but "what," weird huh?) Second, every time I type Paducah - either while texting or writing an email or blog post - spell-check underlines it like, "What is Paducah?"  Having had those experiences, I feel like I should explain to you that Paducah is a lovely little city in Kentucky that is just about half way between Chattanooga, TN and St. Louis, MO.

DSC02070

Its location is precisely what made Paducah enticing. I met a lifelong friend from St. Louis there to catch up and have some time together. It was long overdue.

Surprisingly enough, while wandering around Paducah's quaint downtown we stumbled upon some familiar faces.

DSC02075

How bizarre to see two other St. Louis friends sifting through antique shops in Paducah? Turns out they were headed back from a week in Asheville, NC. SMALL WORLD.

DSC02073

For the record, Paducah is a charming little place chock full of antiques and art galleries and its size makes it the perfect day trip destination. It's especially ideal if you want a quiet place to spend quality time with one of your favorite people on earth.

DSC02077

Annnnnnnd, in case you're in the business of keeping score, I'm crossing another state off the list. Technically this wasn't my first stay in Kentucky, but it was the first time I've had a picture taken of myself there. So, check and check.

Now tell me, have you ever heard of or visited Paducah?

NYC

I'm attempting to keep from publishing twenty posts about our trip to New York City.  Consider this a labor of love, readers. With 300+ pictures taken and a suitcase full of stories to share, it isn't easy to edit myself. Or maybe it is. Maybe I could just say that it was heavenly and leave it at that.  Because, the trip was heavenly. Honestly, this was as close to perfect as any vacation that I've ever been privileged to enjoy. And considering how charmed my traveling life has been to this point, that really is saying something.

It was on this trip that the company, the destination, the occasion, the weather, the food, and the itinerary all worked together so beautifully that I couldn't have asked for anything more. I'm gushing, right? I realize that I am. And if it seems disingenuous, let me assure you that I am not exaggerating. This was, quite frankly, MY (maybe not everyone's) perfect trip.

Last week, I shared with you our unbelievable theatre experience. But in this post, I intend to hit the high points of the rest of the week. There were plenty of them, and even after being home for a week they are all still swimming around in my head reminding me of the good fortune we had! Maybe, if I share the memories here I can get my buns back in gear and resume regularly scheduled programming. Maybe.

Any great vacation always includes great food. There was, of course, an abundance. We compiled a list of "must eats" before boarding the plane and I'm happy to report we knocked that list out of the park. Cheesecake, pizza, a REAL bagel, and cupcakes. We had to have cupcakes. But our first meal was my favorite by far. After checking into the hotel, we boarded our first (of maaaaaaaaaaaaany) subway trains and headed to Katz's Deli for a world famous pastrami sandwich.

In case you're keeping score, this is the deli where the now famous, "I'll have what she's having," scene in When Harry Met Sally was filmed. But more importantly, the pastrami sandwich was pretty spectacular. It was as simple as can be, just an enormous pile of pastrami on two pieces of rye bread. But, WOW. Maybe it was because it was our first meal. Maybe it was because I was hopped up on adrenaline. Maybe it was because they started the meal by bringing us a plate of various house made pickles. But, I was in heaven. This sandwich tasted like New York city. Just the right amount of spice and no frills, just in your face yummy.  Plus the experience of the restaurant reminded us that we definitely weren't in Chattanooga anymore. The tables around us were all speaking different languages (I'm not kidding - French, Spanish & Dutch), the greeter at the door was yelling at customers to move down the line, it was LOUD and the waitress - though nice to us - rolled her eyes openly at the table beside us that didn't tip well. The whole thing set the mood for what was to be a great week.

One of the "couple" items on my Ultimate To DO list is to see a baseball game in all the major league stadiums.  While we were in NYC, we checked another one off the list. We saw an afternoon game at the new Yankee Stadium. Now, I'm not going to say it's nicer than the new Busch (though the hubby did! *gasp*), I will say it is incredibly impressive. Plus, the fact that 70% of the music played was Jay-Z made me smile.  Also, at Yankee Stadium when the grounds crew comes out to "clean up" the infield before the 7th inning, YMCA is played and the crew stops and dances along. It was pretty humorous and definitely something I haven't seen done before. Grown men doing the YMCA will brighten my day EVERY TIME.

We made time to wander through central park that same afternoon. We discovered street entertainment, a guy creating ENORMOUS bubbles and a pair of street musicians playing beautiful classical music under the bridge by the Bethesda fountain (pictured above), that was far from average or expected.  I took the opportunity to cross another item off my Day Zero list and gave a little bit of moolah to the musicians. The acoustics under the bridge contributed such a lovely effect, I couldn't help myself.

Each day more than 3000 visitors climb to the base of the statue of liberty.  Of those 3000, only about 200 are permitted to take the additional (almost) 300 stairs up to the crown. You probably remember that the crown was closed for several years after 9/11 and it will be closed again starting this month for safety and comfort renovations. So, we considered ourselves fortunate to make it to the city during a window where it was possible to look out her crown! It was well worth the suuuuuuuuuuper narrow spiral staircase. The view was completely unique and the experience added in a little bit of "roller coaster" type apprehension and fear that was a welcome adrenaline push. But I guess it goes without saying, we both took some i-bee-pro-pin that night and my calves were definitely remembering the climb when we woke up the next morning.

Although the weather terrorists were predicting rain, flooding and general end of times-Armageddonesque-storms for most of the week, we only had one rainy morning. Thankfully, it wasn't the day we planned to walk the Brooklyn Bridge. Just over a mile each way, we earned the street hot dog and cupcakes that followed.

One of my favorite parts of New York city is the breath taking architecture. It seems like every view is a post card. I loved that during this trip I never worried that I looked like a tourist as I stared up at its beauty slack jawed and impressed. Because, we were tourists in every way on this trip. We brought the camera everywhere, we saw all the sites we could and drank in everything the city had to offer.  Not one moment or view or meal was taken for granted. Together we made memories that I hope will encourage many trips back in years to come.

What city/place makes you want to be a total tourist?

Fall Fashion Week: III

If you follow A Foreign Land on Facebook or little ol' me on Twitter you probably know that the handsome hubby and I spent the last week-ish in New York city. The fact that we've arrived back home smack dab in the middle of fall fashion week is probably good news for you. It means you are saved from the multitude of vacation wrap up posts that are swimming around my head. I have literally hundreds of pictures that I would love to share with you. I have many, many stories to tell, but fashion week has rescued you. Now you'll only have to read through a handful. Call it yet another reason to fall in love with fall fashion week.

DSC01526
{here's me posing it up at Lincoln Center}

That being said, you've stumbled onto a little bit of a hybrid fashion week/ trip log post. Hang in there, I won't go on too long.

During our visit, we had the opportunity to see three Broadway shows.  It was kind of out of control.

Now if you're keeping track, War Horse won the Tony for best play this year. The Book of Mormon won the Tony for best musical. And Anything Goes? It won for best revival.

DSC01528

I told you. It was out of control.
Wanna hear something even cooler? The tickets to War Horse were a gift from my mother in law.  (THANK YOU, MAGGIE!) The hubby won the tickets to The Book of Mormon in the ticket lottery on our FIRST TRY. (In case you're wondering how tough it is to get tickets, there was a lady in the box office buying tickets for the show in MAY.) Then we bought the Anything Goes tickets at the TKTS booth in Times Square (read: heavily discounted).

Go ahead, say it with me everybody, "Out of control."

I'd review the shows, but really it would just end up being a few paragraphs filled with words like, "outstanding," and "unbelievable," and "incredible." I'd gush and ooze even more and it would bore all of you to tears. Suffice it to say these shows won Tony awards for good reasons.  They really were incredibly outstanding and I find it unbelievable that we had the chance to experience them all in one week.  Guess that means we can cross "see a(nother) Broadway show" off the Ultimate To DO list!

Out. Of. Control.

But enough about NYC.  Let's talk fashion week. If you haven't visited Emery's blog moms are for everyone it is time you do it. Not only are you going to get to meet Miss Emery and enjoy her amazing style, you'll find links to tons of other bloggers participating in the fashion week link up. I'm telling you, you'll thank me for it. Now, go.
