Fire Extinguisher on Ready Mode

When I registered for a crème brulée torch and ramekins there were several of our nearest and dearest who were pretty vocal about their doubts as to whether I could actually use the tools successfully. It's true, I was and am a novice in the kitchen, and crème brulée is a hefty task. But my love for proving people wrong it's rich, creamy goodness was enough to encourage my attempt. And despite the disparaging words and out right mockery that I received, at my bridal shower no less, I looked forward to the day that I would feel confident enough to attempt crème brulée.

The day has come.

On Monday I spent the afternoon stirring cream, figuring out what the heck a water bath is and grinding brown sugar. Of course the beasts who live with us took the opportunity to wreak havoc in the midst of all the custard creating - picture toilet paper from the bedroom to the dining room with me stuck at the stove unable to step away from the cream mid scald. Other than that though, the process was pretty drama free.

While there are a few ways that I intend to improve the final product, I gotta brag and say the "burnt cream" we've eaten the last two nights was pretty darn yummy. They said I couldn't possibly make crème brulée and the only thing that might have made this story sweeter is if I'd gotten to watch them eat it.

I'm sooo proud of you. Don't think that everytime you makeit it will turn out, though. It's just like that.
