oscar wrap up

the big night has come and gone. all in all, happily, there were very few surprises in the winner's circle. fashion wise, the night can be summed up as "safe". while there was lots of glamour, and lots of beauty, there were not a lot of risks taken.

at the risk of
coming across as a marion cotillard stalker (3 posts featuring her in less than 30 days), i'm absolutely in love with the dress she wore that night. it was the closest thing to a risk that we saw and it actually paid off on sunday night. her full-length white and gold jean paul gaultier gown was a stand-out in a sea of look alike either red or grecian inspired ensembles. her win was one in a string of awards she's won around the world for her performance, and not undeserved. the acceptance speech she delivered enchantingly, communicated shock, humility and gratitude. according to imdb, cotillard is signed on for 2 very interesting films due for release next year (public enemies with johnny depp and a great ensemble cast, and nine with javier bardem, penelope cruz & sophia loren ~ not bad). can't wait to see more strong work from this talented and beautiful young woman.

i was so excited to see glen hansard & marketa irglova win for best song. now, i am biased since falling slowly is one of my personal favorites (don't believe me? check my mySpace). but how exciting to see two talented singer/songwriters win for such a beautiful song. my hope is that this win will do big things for their careers and introduce them to the american market on
a much wider scale than the film did. it was also cool for jon stewart to bring irglova back on stage after the commercial break to deliver her sweet & simple acceptance speech after she was rudely shuffled off by the same orchestra that had just accompanied her performance!

but back to the fashion...

~ loved jennifer garner's black mermaid oscar de la renta and the van cleef and arpels diamonds were amazing accessories. her hair was deconstructed perfection and she carried herself with grace and elegance.

~ loved heidi klum's dramatic john galliano gown. while the custom made frock was right on trend color wise, it definitely stood out in the crowd. it seemed to be more indicative of the oscar glamour we at home are expecting. and it was far more exciting than what so many of hollywood's leading ladies wore that night. leave it to a super model to lay claim to the title of "best dressed". an interesting back story is that klum bought the dress herself and has placed it up for auction. the proceeds will benefit women's heart disease research and awareness. look good & do good, not a bad combination.

~ and what a necklace! check out keri russell's h stern necklace. it was absolutely stunning and the perfect accent to her champagne nina ricci stunner. her look was much more va va va voom than usual for her. she mentioned on the red carpet that she was out voted and forced to wear the necklace, and i say bravo to her friends or family or stylist or whoever. brilliant advice on their part (and way to listen, keri).

sunday was a wonderful night to be a fan of the movies. and i'm excited for the opportunity to finish watching the nominees.

and the countdown begins for next year's festivities!

La Vie en Rose

I just finished watching La Vie en Rose. It is Olivier Dahan's Edith Piaf biopic starring Marion Cotillard. Though I found the time jumping storyline a bit confusing at times, Cotillard's performance was brilliant. After watching the film, I realized that I didn't choose an Academolly award winner in the best make-up category.
And anyone who can turn this:
Into this:

definitely deserves recognition. Way to go Didier Laverne and Jan Archibald.

The 2008 AcadeMolly Awards

Tomorrow night is the big night! The Oscars are the king of all award shows. And around our house we are all about them. (If I’m being honest, the hubby only cares to the extent that he does because I talk about movies all the time and make him watch all the nominees...) So, before the little golden guys are handed out, I thought I’d weigh in on the films that I’ve seen so far. I don't have the luxury of having screeners sent to my house, so we haven't gotten to see everything (I’m bumming because I never got to see Lars and the Real Girl, I’m Not There or Into the Wild) - but we've done pretty well.

Now, without further ado... Here are the 2008 AcadeMolly Award winners:

Actor in a Leading Role:
Daniel Day Lewis in There Will Be Blood was clearly wonderful but it is difficult for me to ignore Glen Hansard's performance in Once.

Actress in a Leading Role:
Julie Christie was luminescent in Away from Her, but I’d love to see Ellen Page win for her role in Juno.

Actor in a Supporting Role:
Javier Bardem is a no-brainer, he was absolutely terrifying in No Country for Old Men. And in a distant 2nd, I also really enjoyed Ben Foster in 3:10 to Yuma.

Actress in a Supporting Role:
Saoirse Ronan was cringe worthy (in the best possible way) in Atonement. I just loved to hate her. Can't wait to see what's next for this talented young lady. Kelly Macdonald was also brilliant in No Country for Old Men.

Adapted Screenplay:
Sarah Polley wrote an amazing script, and deserves to win an award for Away from Her. Her project is a beautiful piece of storytelling.

Original Screenplay:
If there is justice, Diablo Cody will win for Juno. It was one of my favorites this year!

Director:
Joel & Ethan Coen did an amazing job with No Country for Old Men. It was disturbingly frightening, unexpectedly funny and full of suspense.

Best Picture:
I'm having a hard time this year deciding between 3 amazing films. I loved Once, Juno & No Country for Old Men. All were 10s in my book!

Can't wait for the show tomorrow. As much as I love celebrating the movies, I also look forward to the fashion. I'm just so excited.
